Teach Healthier in Action: Coach Katie Morris!
Last month, we launched our free Teach Healthier mobile app at the TAHPERD Convention in Galveston and met hundreds of incredible educators from around the state. Over 1,000 Texans have already downloaded Teach Healthier and are integrating the free nutrition and physical activity lessons into their existing curricula.
One bright, enthusiastic physical educator we met at TAHPERD was Coach Katie Morris. Katie teaches 5th, 6th and 8th grade P.E. at Harmony Science Academy – Northwest in Houston. Since the TAHPERD Convention, Katie has taken Teach Healthier back to her gym and uses the app in all of her classes. Katie says, “I typically try to use the app at least 2-3 times per week since we do not have a separate health class.” Her students wouldn’t be receiving crucial nutrition lessons if Katie wasn’t implementing them in her classes.
“I teach 5th, 6th and 8th grade and this app works for all of them. Sometimes I modify if needed or even let the kids make up their own variations, they really enjoy that!” She added, “We have loved the Protein Tag and the Cholesterol Zombie Tag!” We asked Katie what she likes most about the app. “I love that the app is FREE! I really like that you can review a lesson before you decide to teach it and you can save the ones you like to the favorites section.”
“I would definitely recommend the app to other educators. Even general classroom teachers will love the Energizers and other lessons for in the classroom or during recess time.” Katie is right! And Teach Healthier is not only intended for physical education and classroom teachers. This free tool is for anyone who works with students, with the goal of getting nutrition and physical activity into our kids’ days, every day!
Thank you, Coach Morris, for growing a healthier school and sharing Teach Healthier with your fellow educators! Anyone can download Teach Healthier in the Apple App Store or Google Play on a phone or tablet today, and you can upload photos of Teach Healthier Lessons in Action for the Community Challenge!
