Choose Healthier Community Champion Spotlight: Healthy Southeast Texas
When Beaumont resident and City Council member Alan Coleman learned that his community, Jefferson County, ranked last in the state for health behaviors, he decided to take action. His commitment to health has inspired a movement in Southeast Texas.
Alan Coleman became involved with community health through the Let’s Move! initiative while he served on the Beaumont City Council. Beaumont was the first city in the U.S. to earn all five gold medals through this initiative. Alan wanted to make a positive and lasting change, so he created the Healthy Southeast Texas website with the hopes of effectively disseminating information that would improve the health of his community.
Healthy Southeast Texas, a collaborative formed in 2014, promotes and encourages better physical and mental health through healthy lifestyles incorporating healthy eating habits and physical exercise. We partnered with Healthy Southeast Texas to expand our free Choose Healthier mobile app to Beaumont and the greater Southeast Texas communities!
Bringing the Choose Healthier mobile app to Southeast Texas empowers residents to lead healthier lives by presenting them opportunities to take healthy action in their neighborhoods and the ability to share and promote these opportunities with their friends and families.
“When I was first planning our website, I wanted to include an activity calendar, but I didn’t know where I could find such a feature, ” said Alan. “I was co-presenting with IT’S TIME TEXAS’ CEO Baker Harrell, and he told me about their new Choose Healthier app. The Choose Healthier app allows users to find real-time healthy events and look ahead on the calendar for upcoming opportunities. We are very excited that the Choose Healthier app is now operating in Beaumont, and we look forward to expanding our partnership base and providing more healthy opportunities for the families of Southeast Texas.”
We are so thankful for health champions like Alan who inspire healthy change in our communities. Through the efforts of Healthy Southeast Texas and Choose Healthier, we help make it easier for Southeast Texas families find free and affordable ways to be active, eat healthier, and have fun.
Choose Healthier is currently available in Beaumont, Central Texas, Fort Worth, San Antonio, and Smithville, and we’re expanding to more communities in 2018!
