Choose Healthier Coach Tip: Physical Activity vs. Exercise
A: Physical activity and exercise are actually different things: physical activity is defined as movement that involves contraction of your muscles. Any of the activities we do throughout the day that involve movement — housework, gardening, walking, climbing stairs — are examples of physical activity. Exercise is a specific form of physical activity — planned, purposeful physical activity performed with the intention of acquiring fitness or other health benefits. If your doctor suggests you increase your physical activity, one way to do that may be taking 15-minute walking breaks throughout your day, or taking the stairs at work versus the elevator. These simple changes can help improve one’s daily amount of physical activity. Of course, we recommend making time for exercise at least 3x a week and we are happy to help you create a schedule that works for you if you give us a call!
