Meet Our Keynote Speakers
Dr. Michael C. Lu
Dr. Michael C. Lu is the Dean of the School of Public Health at the University of California, Berkeley. Before his tenure at Berkeley, Dr. Lu served as the Director of the Maternal and Child Health Bureau under the Obama Administration. He launched key initiatives to reduce maternal, infant, and child mortality nationwide. His outstanding leadership earned him the Hubert H. Humphrey Service to America Award in 2013. Dr. Lu’s research at UCLA focused on racial-ethnic disparities in birth outcomes, and he has been a practicing obstetrician for nearly two decades, attending over 1,000 births. He has been recognized as one of the Best Doctors in America since 2005 and continues contributing to the field through his research and publications.
Travis County Judge Andy Brown
Judge Andy Brown serves as the Travis County Judge, presiding over the Commissioners Court and overseeing a $1.4 billion annual budget. As the County’s chief administrator and Director of Emergency Management, Judge Brown has made significant strides in increasing resources for historically underserved communities. His leadership during the COVID-19 pandemic included prioritizing vaccination efforts for communities of color and providing essential support during winter storm Uri.
Judge Brown is committed to improving mental and behavioral health services, expanding affordable housing, and promoting transparency and community participation in county governance. Under his guidance, the Commissioners Court has funded $110 million for housing for people experiencing homelessness, creating up to 3,000 additional housing units in Austin and Travis County.
Nelson William Wolff
Nelson Wolff’s distinguished career in public service includes roles in the Texas House of Representatives, Texas Senate, San Antonio City Council, and as Mayor of San Antonio. As Bexar County Judge, Wolff reorganized county government, led major economic and infrastructure projects, and established specialty courts focusing on rehabilitation.
Additionally, his efforts have significantly modernized Bexar County governance. Among his many achievements, Wolff is the architect of the nation’s first all-digital public library, BiblioTech. An accomplished author, he has received numerous awards for his contributions to public service and leadership.
